About the TestDaF Exam

TestDaF is the abbreviation for „Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache“ that is “Test of German as a Foreign Language.”

It is a language admission exam used to demonstrate the ability to study at German universities.

The development and organization of the TestDaF exams are overseen by the TestDaF Institute.

The TestDaF exam is taken before starting studies at the respective university. The results are awarded in three levels – TDN 3, TDN 4, and TDN 5 – which correspond to the CEFR (GeR) competence levels B2, B2–C1, and C1.

TestDaF Exam Format

The TestDaF exam consists of a total of four subareas. In all parts of the TestDaF exam, it is assessed whether you have the necessary knowledge of German to study in Germany.

Listening and reading comprehension of general and academic topics are required, as well as written and oral expression.

However, no special prior knowledge is required to successfully pass the TestDaF exam. The four sections of the TestDaF are:

  • Reading Comprehension

  • Listening Comprehension

  • Written Production

  • Oral Production

TestDaF levels

Subtest level descriptions

The Can Do Statements are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe (CEFR) and the levels of the ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe). They provide test takers and institutions such as universities in Germany and abroad or employers, to whom the TestDaF certificate is presented, with internationally comparable information on the language level of the respective person.
